Afrikoa Highlights

Learn about the bean-to-bar chocolate making process involving fermenting, drying, roasting, grinding, refining, conching, and tempering of cacao beans. We source heirloom cacao beans directly from farmers in Tanzania and carefully control each step of the process to create unique and complex flavours. The focus on single-origin chocolate means that our chocolate is made from cacao beans grown in a one specific region, allowing chocolate lovers to taste the unique characteristics of Tanzanian cacao. This bean-to-bar movement emphasizes on sustainability, transparency, and ethical practices in
chocolate production. Taste some of our favourite chocolate and indulge yourself in the fascinating world of cacao.

HISTORY

Afrikoa Chocolate is a South African bean-to-bar chocolate company founded in 2015. We were inspired by the high-quality cacao beans grown on African soil and the lack of fine Made in Africa chocolate on the market. We started by sourcing cacao beans directly from farmers in Tanzania and began making chocolate from scratch in a small kitchen in Cape Town.
Afrikoa’s chocolate quickly gained recognition for its unique and complex flavours, and the company grew rapidly, expanding its operations to a larger facility. The company emphasizes on sustainability and ethical practices, working directly with farmers to ensure fair compensation and environmentally friendly farming practices.

The tradition was later passed down to the Aztecs and eventually brought to Europe by the Spanish conquistadors, where it was sweetened and popularized.
