Description

If you’re looking for a swashbuckling good time, then hop on board Cape Town’s most exciting family attraction, the Jolly Roger Pirate Boat. The only authentic pirate ship in South Africa, this 90-minute cruise offers the young at heart an authentic sea going adventure. Take in the famous South African sunset as you cruise the Atlantic seaboard. Guests can take in the stunning harbour views, while enjoying a complimentary glass of sparkling wine. Meanwhile, the whole family will laugh at the fun-filled antics of the pirate crew and be impressed by the iconic views of Table Mountain. On board facilities include a cash bar and a tented roof, allowing for trips even in light rainy weather.

History

Piracy has been around for centuries, with the earliest trade routes of the Aegean and Mediterranean the first instances of ships being hijacked. The discovery of the New World saw a massive increase in piracy. There was constant movement of sugar, gold and human capital between the Old and New Worlds, drawing pirates to the open seas of the Caribbean. Though they were reputed to be bloodthirsty and lawless, many pirates were skilled men drawn from maritime trades. Piracy still exists today, but rather than mercilessly killing their victims, modern-day pirates are a lot more sophisticated and look to profit from their conquests.

Advice for visitors

A trip to the V&A Waterfront is a great way to spend a weekend afternoon with the family in Cape Town. Before climbing aboard the pirate ship, spend some time strolling around the waterfront. There are plenty of shops suited to both the older and younger crowds, and the new Hamley’s Express train is a big hit with the kids. The Pirate Boat Sunset Cruise accommodates both parents and children, with entertainment and a complimentary glass of bubbly to be enjoyed as the sun goes down.

Did you know

Why do pirates wear an eye patch over one eye? Because pirates needed keep one eye adjusted to bright light outside, and one eye adjusted to the low light inside, the patch was a handy way to allow for a gradual adjustment. Basically, the covered eye could quickly adjust to the dark light below deck should they have to find something there quickly during battle.
