Established in 2004 with the merging of Stellenbosch Vineyards and Vinfruco, Welmoed Estate is one of the oldest proclaimed farms in the Stellenbosch district. Originally granted to Governor Simon van der Stel in 1690, the farm was subsequently owned by Jacobus van der Heyden, who rebelled against the cruel Dutch governor’s rule. Over the years the farm has produced many great wines and continues to maintain its proud wine making tradition today.

Did you know
Stellenbosch Vineyards is the amalgamation of two vineyards that flourish on the Welmoed Farm. The name Welmoed is believed to have come about because of the bravery displayed by the original owner, Jacobus van der Heyden. Van der Heyden almost lost his life in his rebellion against the area’s governor and as a result, Dutch settlers at the Cape believed that: “Deze vent heft wel moed” which translates to “this chap has courage” – hence the name Welmoed.
