Swirl specialises in a unique taste adventure of perfectly paired culinary creations like Cape Malay bobotie spring rolls or herb crusted lamb rack.

The tasting room offers the full wine range, laid out perfectly for visits all year round. It also has a toasty fireplace for winter, and has a patio and grass area for enjoying balmy summer afternoons.

Established in 2004 with the merging of Stellenbosch Vineyards and Vinfruco, Welmoed Estate is one of the oldest proclaimed farms in the Stellenbosch district. Originally granted to Governor Simon van der Stel in 1690, the farm was subsequently owned by Jacobus van der Heyden, who rebelled against the cruel Dutch governor’s rule. Over the years the farm has produced many great wines and continues to maintain its proud wine making tradition today.

Advice for visitors

The vineyard is well-known for its award-winning wines. Enjoy a tasting of five wines and complementing charcuterie platters, and if you’re feeling adventurous, try one of the special pairings. Each season brings with it a pairing of the estate’s premium range of wines alongside decadent treats. Complete the day with a late lunch at the Bus Stop diner overlooking the lake. The pizzas and burgers are to die for! Their annual Stellenbosch Vineyards Pizza and Wine Festival is a family-friendly event not to be missed. While at the estate, take advantage of the picturesque views of the Helderberg mountains.

Did you know

Stellenbosch Vineyards is the amalgamation of two vineyards that flourish on the Welmoed Farm. The name Welmoed is believed to have come about because of the bravery displayed by the original owner, Jacobus van der Heyden. Van der Heyden almost lost his life in his rebellion against the area’s governor and as a result, Dutch settlers at the Cape believed that: “Deze vent heft wel moed” which translates to “this chap has courage” – hence the name Welmoed.
