HISTORY
The Durbanville Wine Valley, and many of the wine estates that call the valley their home, date back to the late 1690’s, with many of the vineyards, homesteads and farm buildings representing a rich history of farming and family heritage.
Fast forward 300 years to 2024: The Durbanville Wine Safari was founded, filling a much needed gap in the Durbanville Wine Valley.
Joss Terry, the founder, saw the potential of offering a safe, fun and educational wine tour service, that would enhance the experience of all visitors to the Durbanville Wine Valley.
The introduction of the Durbanville Wine Safari, in collaboration with all 12 operating wine estates in the Durbanville Wine Valley, ensured that the foundation of wine heritage would be showcased in every kilometre ventured, and every glass poured.
It is now time for the Durbanville Wine Valley to shine, and the Durbanville Wine Safari is the perfect way to experience it!

DID YOU KNOW
The Durbanville Wine Valley and the slopes it occupies form part of the Tygerberg Hills (also known as the Tygerberg). This area served as an important inland outspan (resting and grazing place) and transit point along early wagon routes. It played a supporting role in the broader supply network that sustained the VOC (Dutch East India Company) refreshment station at the Cape and, later, during the British occupation of the Cape Colony.
The Tygerberg Hills on which the Durbanville Wine Valley is situated are underlain primarily by the Tygerberg Formation of the Malmesbury Group. These are late Precambrian (Neoproterozoic) metasedimentary rocks, mainly greywacke, shale, phyllite, and schist, deposited roughly between 980 and 830 million years ago (with some estimates placing parts around 900–560 Ma). They were later intruded by the Cape Granite Suite around 630–550 million years ago and metamorphosed.
The long exposure and weathering of these very old formations, combined with minimal recent glacial or alluvial cover in the Cape coastal region, mean that Durbanville features some of the oldest vineyard soils and bedrock materials used for viticulture anywhere in the world. The resulting soils are clay-rich, shale-derived, and well-drained — excellent for cool-climate wines like award-winning Sauvignon Blanc.
