The Museum of Dogs celebrates the myriad ways in which dogs impact our lives.

The Museum of Dogs Highlights

  • We currently feature six exhibitions: the history of dogs in South Africa, the influence of dogs in culture, forty personal stories on how dogs have influenced our daily lives, a photography exhibition by DJ Shelwell, a ceramic exhibition by Tania Babb, sculptures by Carol Slabolepszy and Mervyn Dragsund, an exhibition on dogs of the White House and short films from around the world.

OVERVIEW

The Museum of Dogs is dedicated to celebrating dogs and exploring their role in history as comforters, friends, and workers. Through photographs, sculptures, short films, and over forty personal stories with items illustration these stories, we bring their remarkable contributions to life. Proudly based in Cape Town, we invite visitors to join us in honouring these loyal companions.

We warmly welcome well-trained, on-leash dogs into the museum, but please keep in mind that the space is exclusively indoors with many ceramics and valuable objects on display.

HISTORY

The Museum of Dogs was founded on 27 July 2024 with a simple mission: to honour dogs. Located in a 17th-century Dutch cottage – one of the oldest buildings in Cape Town – the museum uses art, music and personal stories to celebrates the many ways dogs have shaped human lives. A visit takes about an hour, with a gift shop to explore, a spot to buy coffee or wine, and stunning views of Table Mountain to enjoy
