Description

Visit Cape Town’s first and oldest township, Langa, and neighbouring township Gugulethu on this hop-on, hop-off tour. The experience includes a free one-hour walking tour and bicycle ride in Langa, where you’ll be introduced to the vibrant township community and the bustling Langa Arts Quarter. With marked pick-up and drop-off points in the area, LaGuGu allows you to take your time and see as much or as little of each stop as you like. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, hop-on the bus and head to Gugulethu.

History

The Urban Areas Act was passed in 1923 as a way of forcing black and coloured Africans to take up residence in allocated areas. Langa and Gugulethu are two such areas. Langa was opened in 1927 as a residence for those who were removed from Ndabeni near Maitland. Close to Langa, Gugulethu was established in 1958 to accommodate the overflow from Langa township, as well as migrant workers from the Eastern Cape. The township’s population quickly grew to over 27,000 by 1963. Today, both Langa and Gugulethu continue to be vibrant communities of Cape Town.

Advice for visitors

The full tour runs 2.5 hours, but guides recommend guests take their time and hop-off the tour to get the full experience of these bustling townships. Despite what people may think, the township and the tour are both completely safe, and the locals are welcoming and friendly. The free walking tour and bike ride in Langa is a great way to meet and interact with the community. A highlight of the area is a stop at Mzoli’s in Gugulethu, which offers authentic South African braai food, proper outdoor eating and a lively atmosphere.

Did you know

Langa is a Xhosa name that translates in English to means ‘sun’. The township’s full name is actually Langalibalele, named in honour of a Hlubi rebel who rose against the Natal government and was imprisoned on Robben Island in 1875. Gugulethu is also a Xhosa name, which translates as ‘our pride’. Before it was changed to Gugulethu, the township was called Nyanga West.
