Description
Honest Chocolate is a small, artisanal Bean-to-Bar chocolate company based in Cape Town. The company is famous for dark chocolate made from organically grown and ethically sourced Tanzanian cacao beans. In addition to their chocolate, they also have a relaxed café located in the heart of the city between the bustling streets of Loop and Bree, which overflows with scents of quality chocolate and coffee. The café serves a variety of teas, coffee and hot chocolates, as well as a selection of chocolate truffles, tarts and cakes. This little hidden gem is a mecca of all things chocolate and you will surely find a delicious treat to please the palate.
History
Honest Chocolate began as a bit of an experimentation with raw cacao. The co-owner, Anthony, made a few simple chocolates using raw cacao powder for himself and friends. He received such positive feedback that he was sure he was onto something, so he spent a few months teaching himself about the art and science of chocolate making. At the same time, Michael was also experimenting with raw chocolate in London and receiving similar feedback. Upon his return to Cape Town, Michael linked up with Anthony, and together they developed the Honest Chocolate concept. Today, Honest Chocolate produces high-quality chocolate slabs made with organically produced and ethically sourced Tanzanian cacao beans which are roasted, ground, and tempered in their Woodstock production kitchen.

Advice for visitors
When visiting the café, down in the sunny outside courtyard, which is part of the original building, or in the cosy inner café and sip on a warming coffee coupled with a chocolate delight. You won’t be disappointed with any of their treats, but you simply have to try at least one of the following specialities: their dairy-free milkshakes, trademark ‘coconut dream’ drink, or their banana bread bunny chow filled with silky chocolate in the middle.
There is also a Secret Gin Bar tucked away in the courtyard. Visit the café in the evening time and grab a chocolate treat and then pop to the bar for a gin! Continue with the night, and climb one more flight of stairs to get to the upstairs bar which is open Thursday to Saturday night and available to hire for events or functions.
